Clarisonic Review: Sensitive Skin

Monday, 23 February 2015

I took the plunge last Christmas and finally invested in the Clarisonic Mia 2. After drooling over it for years and hearing everyone in the beauty world rave about it, I finally gave in. Being the stingy tight-arse that I am, I did not take this purchase lightly. It was only after weeks of research and review-reading that I decided it was the one for me (DON'T EVEN ASK how long it took me to decide on a colour!)

Some notes from my research:
  • The Clarisonic has a handy timer that instructs you on how long you should brush each section of your face
  • It’s not a rotating brush like the suss-looking Philips VisaPure. The Clarisonic runs on sonic power (duh! The name) and sends light pulses that vibrate and wake your skin up. It basically shakes the dirt and gunk out of your pores
  • It’s a gentle physical exfoliator that makes a soothing hhhhuuuummmmmm sound that seems to say - “I’m here, everything is going to be okay”
  • Did I mention it does not look suss, like some other face brushes?
  • It comes in a plethora of colours

I picked up the bright green colour in Energy. Yellow was my first preference but in the travel case it looks like a mutated banana. Anyway, I won’t bore you with the details.

It’s been 3 months and I can finally give my opinion!

First of all, I have super duper sensitive skin. You know those organic/natural/basically-dirt products packed with essential oils? Well, even they break me out! I never use anything abrasive on my skin and prefer chemical exfoliants over physical because my skin aches for days after a good scrub. The first time I used the Clarisonic I was pleased to not have been left in scars. The normal brush bristles are quite hard but because there are so many bristles, they don’t poke or prick. It lathers my cleanser up pretty well when dabbed in water beforehand (I use Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel or Aesop Fabulous Face Cleanser). It automatically turns off in 1 minute so there’s not a chance you’ll over-exfoliate. It’s a surprisingly quick process that does not add much hassle to your daily routine.

Each time I use the Clarisonic (let’s call it Soni for short from now on) I am amazed at how smooth my skin is. While it obviously won’t be the holy grail of every skin solution (i.e. it won’t cure the acne you’ve had for years, it won’t scrub away your hyperpigmentation and it definitely won’t smooth out your crow’s feet), it does improve overall skin texture. I still get hormonal breakouts on my chin and T-zone but my face doesn’t looks as bad when I do. When I’m breaking out, the rest of my skin is still amazing and with the help of a little concealer, my skin looks fresh and fine!

Warning: do NOT use Soni on broken or oozing spots (after you’ve picked or popped), it will spread the bacteria and give you immense pain!

The 411 – invest in Soni if you want to improve your overall skin texture. Your skin will look and feel healthier but it won’t cure any skin conditions. Think of it as the handy side-kick to your skincare routine, not the superstar.

  2. Hi there!

Hmm...blackheads. It should help to reduce them because it's a mild exfoliator but I'm not sure if it'll get rid of them completely. I don't have blackheads but I do get small hard bumps around my nose - I find that the Clarisonic helps to clear it and makes the skin soft again. Maybe if you coupled it with an overnight chemical exfoliant the blackheads might budge. Let me know how you go! xx
